Clovis Nighthawks Take 2026 American Legion California State Baseball Championship Tournament
Cecil Cox Post 147 in Clovis, CA hosted the 2026 Department of California American Legion Baseball State Championship Tournament this year at Fresno Pacific University.
American Legion Baseball is a premier, nationwide amateur league for youth aged 13 to 19, sponsored by The American Legion. Established in 1925, it promotes physical fitness, sportsmanship, and good citizenship while preparing young players for collegiate and professional baseball careers. Did you know that 51% of MLB Hall of Famers played American Legion Baseball in their youth? There are 59 American Legion Baseball Teams this year in California which is divided into numerous "Areas".
On July 22nd the tournament kicked off with a welcoming banquet host by the Clovis Veterans Memorial District and Clovis American Legion Post 147. The Clovis Veterans Memorial District literally rolled out the Red Carpet for the players, coaches and parents. Also featured was guest speaker Director Patrick Ruth , from the Clovis Veterans Memorial District who played with the Phillies in the MLB. The meal of Beef Burgundy was cooked from scratch by Legionnaire Bruce Staebler and his grandson Tyler serving 300 guests. The Central Valley Blue Star Moms, Post Auxiliary Unit 147, Scout Troop 257 and Chapter 147 of the American Legion Rider all helped serve and bus tables.
The following day the tournament the tournament began with the Clovis Nighthawks facing the Costal Cowboys from Paso Robles in Game 1. The Costal Cowboys jumped to an early lead which they held for most of the game. The Nighthawks gained the lead in the late innings and hung to win by a score of 9 – 7.
The following day the Nighthawks faced the San Diego Hoover Panthers and came out swinging scoring 6 runs in first inning. The Nighthawks bats were hot throughout the game resulting in a 14 – 4 win over the Panthers.
Next up for the Nighthawks were El Segundo Blues. The Blues took and held the lead for most of the game. In the 6thinning the Nighthawks were able to tie the game at 3 – 3. In the bottom of the seven inning, with 2 outs and no one on base, the Nighthawks singled to put a runner on first. The next batter was hit by a pitch. The following batter scorched a line drive down the first base line scoring runner and Nighthawks won with a walk-off score of 4 – 3.
At this point all teams, except the Chico Nuts, had been eliminated with 2 losses. The Nighthawks were undefeated at this point and needed a victory to secure the 2026 Title of California State Champions. The Nuts jumped to and early of 2 – 1 which they maintained through most of the game. The Nighthawks rallied in the 6th inning with 3 runs and took the lead 4 – 2. The Nighthawks held on to beat the Nuts 4 - 2.
The Nighthawks traveled to play in the Western Regional Playoffs held in Fairfield, CA August 4th– 9th. They played against the state Champions from Arizona, Utah, Neveda, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. The Nighthawks took a respectable 3rd place in the Western Regionals.

Our Annual Veterans Memorial Golf Tournament supports our local Veterans here in the Central Valley. One Hundred percent of all proceeds are donated to Veterans Support Organizations here in the San Joaquin Valley and support a wide variety of Programs and services. On Jul 2, 2026 we presented a check of $15,000 to the Fresno VA Medical Hospital in support of numerous Veteran programs, which are not funded by the Federal Government. We have held 12 tournaments in all and donated over $202,000 to the VA.

Our History
The Members of American Legion Post 147 held their first election of officers in December of 1919 under a temporary Charter. The members voted to name our Post after Pvt. John Cecil Cox. Pvt. Cox was the first Clovis, California serviceman to be killed during World War I at the Battle Belleau Wood in France. The Clovis post was granted its permanent Charter on March 3, 1921, with 24 Charter Members. Today, the Post has almost 500 members and is actively engaged in supporting our veterans, their families and our community.
